Afton Mountain Safety Tips
  • Dense fog on Afton Mountain can pose a driving challenge for even the most experienced drivers. VDOT has installed fog sensor lights to help increase visibility during such weather conditions. But to make sure that you’re as safe as possible when passing over the mountain, remember the following tips:
    • During foggy conditions, be sure to use low-beam headlights and leave plenty of room between your car and others
    • Check VDOT’s electronic variable message signs at the base of the mountain and on connecting roads and highways to get the latest road condition information
    • Before leaving, visit your My 511 Control Room to check the Afton Mountain traffic cameras and to sign-up for e-mail alerts to get the most up-to-date information concerning traffic delays, accidents or construction sent directly to your mobile device
