Employer-provided commuter benefits

Many employers offer a wide variety of incentives for people who use alternative forms of transportation to get to and from work each day. Ask your employer if you’re eligible for any of the following:

  • Commuter Checks – tax-free vouchers you can use toward public transportation (and since up to $115 of each month’s Commuter Checks can be taken as a pre-tax salary reduction, they can reduce your taxable income by $1380 every year)
  • Free or Subsidized Parking – usually offered to those who participate in an organized vanpool or carpool
  • Telework – your company may allow you to avoid your stressful, costly commute by working from home (or from a nearby telework center) one or more days a week
  • Rideshare/Carpool Matching – if you need help finding someone to share your commute with, your organization might be able to help, either in-house or through a local commuter assistance agency
